Vanessa and Jim

Vanessa and Jim

After several visits to the Garden, Vanessa learned yoga was offered, became a member, and started classes. She was thrilled to be stretching again and a bonus was having yoga classes in the gardens or conservatories. She loves that Instructor, Mandi, incorporates the sights and sounds of the garden into the sessions. Vanessa leaves refreshed and relaxed.

Recently retired, Jim wondered how he would fill his days. One morning he cleaned his car and ran his errands by 8:30am. He called a former colleague who advised him to "seek joy and abundance." That brought a laugh but also some introspection. Two things Jim was interested in rekindling were his practice of meditation and playing hockey.

Enter Vanessa, who brought Jim to a Thursday evening summer event at the Garden. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun, the music was great, and the gardens were amazing. Jim looked around and knew he had found the perfect place to renew his dedication to meditation.

Now when he visits, he can select from a variety of beautiful and tranquil spots to sit and listen to his meditation lessons. What he has seen and learned about the garden during these trips has been eye opening and affirms his positive view of the Garden. One day he noticed a group of young children dancing around wearing costumes having such fun. He thought, that is joy and abundance. On another visit he walked through a gathering and realized it was a Pride celebration. Everyone was excited, meeting friends and sharing ideas. Jim thought, what a joyful crowd and what an example of beautiful acceptance.

Along with his meditation Jim is playing hockey with the Rusty Blades team. New England Botanic Garden is his place of balance and beauty. Vanessa continues her yoga. On Thursday evenings in the summer, her mahjong group gathers to play a few games at the picnic table in the Cottage Garden while they listen to music drifting over from the musicians in the Winter Garden. Vanessa and Jim explore the gardens, walk the woodland trails, and attend events throughout the year.

Together and apart, Vanessa and Jim have found relaxation, joy, and abundance at New England Botanic Garden and that is why they chose to support our mission.
