Long-time members, Trudy Roybal and Steve Rowell, are attracted by the innovation, educational focus and creativity at New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill. Our staff takes that as a great compliment coming from these distinguished educators, travelers, and outdoor enthusiasts! Early on, Steve, worked as a river guide out west, utilizing his degree in geology. He later graduated in the first class at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University then spending most of his career at the school as a faculty member. Trudy grew up in Santa Fe. She recently retired from teaching elementary school and brings her passion for gardening, art, and education to everything she does.

They have enjoyed sharing NEBG with friends and family. A few years ago, they were inspired by the renderings for the Ramble family garden and liked the innovative design, and educational opportunities presented through the plans. Trudy and Steve understood the importance this new garden would play in providing greater access to people of all ages to the natural world.

They both grew up with parents who were supportive of their communities, places of worship and educational institutions, so the tradition of giving has been an important part of their lives as well. Reviewing their giving options, they decided to make a gift through their IRA. Steve mentioned that giving directly from their IRA to NEBG appealed to him, as they avoided paying taxes and the gift helped cover their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). He said, "We liked the fact that 100% of our gift went right to the Ramble project."

Trudy and Steve have visited the new Ramble Garden often, bringing friends. They are looking forward to sharing this beautiful space with their two adult children and their families when they next visit from California!
